As an added service to the community around MACFAST College, Rev. Dr. Mulamoottil initiated a Community Radio Station housed on the campus. Radio MACFAST 90.4 is the first on-campus Community radio in the State and 46th in the Country. Community Radio as a model, is a democratic medium assisting the work of both public and voluntary organizations as part of an emerging, non-profit community development sector. Radio MACFAST 90.4 bridges the knowledge divide in the community. Radio MACFAST 90.4 was launched on 01 November 2009.radio1

The aims and objectives:

  • To achieve social change and development objectives
  • To empower communities to speak for themselves, to give a voice to the voiceless and to be a force for social and economic good
  • To provide opportunity and exposure to groups that are traditionally marginalized by mainstream media, to broadcast their programs
  • To establish community radio as an important part of community development and of the community and voluntary sector
  • To enhance the capacities of local people to work together to tackle a range of social problems, including poverty and exclusion
  • To nurture the creative talents of the community and to provide a forum for a diversity of opinions and useful information

Radio MACFAST 90.4 is primarily a Community Development initiative which uses radio as its medium. Community Development involves:radio2

  • The exchange of information, networking of groups, and provision of skills and training which are all key elements of developing a community
  • The promotion of awareness of the many community groups and facilities in the area
  • The empowering of these groups to use radio to promote themselves and speak directly to the community

The radio acts as an effective tool for awareness especially for environment consciousness. Since November 2010 Rev. Dr. Mulamoottil has initiated a program called ‘Clean and Green Tiruvalla’ that has been broadcasted every Friday between 7.30pm and 8.30 pm and every Monday and Tuesday between 2.00pm and 2.30 pm to raise awareness in the community towards the environment. This program not only raises awareness but also offers listeners the opportunity to discuss their views. Radio MACFAST is driven by the communities it serves, providing a mechanism for facilitating individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own diverse stories, to share experiences, and in a media rich world to become active creators and contributors of media.
